About Air Madagascar

Air Madagascar is the national flag carrier of Madagascar. The airline operates an extensive domestic network, as well as scheduled international services to 50 destinations in 11 countries within Europe, Asia and neighbouring African and Indian Ocean island destinations. Popular destinations include Paris, Marseille, Bangkok, Guangzhou and more. The airline also offers a wider network through codeshare flights operated by partners airlines, including Air Austral, Air Seychelles, and Air Mauritious.

Air Madagascar is the operating title of the airline, which has the full name of Société Nationale Malgache de Transports Aériens. Air Madagascar is based at Ivato International Airport, in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The airline is committed to giving meaning to each passenger's journey, and is dedicated to developing sustainably.

The airline was founded in 1962. In 1998, for the first time, Air Madagascar inaugurated flights to Asia, opening an Antananarivo-Singapore route on a Boeing 767-200. For Air Madagascar, 2014 was a significant year with IOSA certification and new management team. In 2017, Air Austral and Air Madagascar signed a strategic partnership agreement, formalising the terms and conditions of the acquisition of a 49% stake in Air Madagascar by Air Austral.


Tsardia is the new low-cost subsidiary of Air Madagascar, used to operate short-haul flights within Madagascar. Flights might be booked under the Air Madagascar brand, but will be operated by a ‘Tsardia’ branded plane.

Baggage allowance depends on both the cabin class, fare, and route being operated. The table below provides more information.

Business class passengers are allowed 32 kg on all of our networks.

Passengers in economy class on long-haul and regional flights are allowed 23 kg, and 20 kg on domestic flights (except for tickets at promotional prices or discounts - see the table below).

Airport Check-In

On regional flights, check-in opens two and a half hours and closes one hour before scheduled departure.

On domestic flights, check-in opens two hours and closes thirty minutes before scheduled departure.

On long-haul flights, check-in opens three hours and closes one hour before scheduled departure.



Class Fares

Air Madagascar offers three class types: Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class.



Economy Class

Economy class is called "Ylang", and composed of 224 seats on the Airbus A340-300 and 156 seats on the Boeing 737-800.

To keep you entertained during your trip with us, the economy class also gives each passenger a 10.44 '' individual screen on the back of the seats.

Economy Seating

The majority of long haul flights are operated at night; relax in comfortable cushioned seating. Economy seats have 32 inches in pitch and are 18 inches in width.



Premium Economy Class

Premium Economy Facilities

Called "Vanilla Class", passengers travelling in the Premium Economy class will be able to benefit from a check-in at the Business counter and priority baggage handling. The premium cab has electrical outlets for your electronic device.

To keep passengers entertained, premium economy also gives each passenger a 10.44 '' individual screen on the back of the seats. Each seat also has an individual noise reducing audio headset for viewing the films. If you prefer to read, there is an individual an adjustable reading lamp on each seat.

Passengers can stay connected, as SATCOM technology means you will be able to make telephone calls during the flight.

Premium Economy Seating

The Vanilla class cabin is made up of 21 seats, reclining at 123 °, and in a configuration of 2/3/2. The spacing between the seats is 98 cm (compared to 81 cm in Economy Class).




Called "Baobab", is the name of the Business Class on the A340-300, and is one of the best business classes offered in the Indian Ocean!

Check-in at the exclusive Business Class counters.

Enjoy a large personal 16 "15" screen. Each seat also has an individual noise reducing audio headset for viewing the films. If you prefer to read, there is an individual an adjustable reading lamp on each seat.

Passengers can stay connected, as SATCOM technology means you will be able to make telephone calls during the flight.

Business Class Seating

The cabin offers 30 business seats configured in 2/2/2. Thanks to its fully reclining seat up to 180 °, travel as if you were in a real bed. The seats have a spacing of 1.50 m, offering you optimal comfort.

Lounge Access

Business passengers can access private lounges at airports, including the Air France lounge at Roissy-CDG Terminal 2C, the Cezanne lounge at Marseille-Provence airport, or the recently renovated Air Madagascar private lounge at the airport.




TV and Film

VOD (Video on demand) is available on long-haul flights. Options include films, a wide selection of music, and games which are available to entertain passengers during the flight.

The airline also has a magazine to keep passengers entertained, with a new issue published every 2 months. There are duty-free products, including souvenirs, in the magazine that are on sale during the flight.


On-board WiFi is not currently available.

Airline Alliance

Vanilla Alliance

The Vanilla Alliance is an airline alliance, formed in 2015 to improve air connectivity within the Indian Ocean region. The goals of the Vanilla Alliance include increasing air service between the islands, providing more attractive fares and optimisation through codesharing. Along with Air Madagascar, the other four members of the alliance are: Air Austral, Air Mauritius, Air Seychelles and Int'Air Îles.

Ivato International Airport

Ivato International Airport is the main international airport serving Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar and is the main hub for Air Madagascar.

Other airlines which fly to Antananarivo include Air Austral, Air France, Airlink, Air Mauritius, Air Seychelles, Comores Aviation, Corsair International, Madagasikara Airways and Kenya Airways. Ivato International Airport has one runaway and can handle nearly a million passengers per year.

Special Services

Flying with Babies (Under 24 months)

On domestic flights, babies travel free of charge and receive a 90% discount. This also applies to international flights, if the baby is travelling on an adult's lap. Passengers can book babies in as children (child's rates) to be allocated an individual seat.

On-board, babies can have a meal and cradle - please request this when booking, at least 48 hours prior to departure.

Babies travelling on parents' laps receive a baggage allowance of 10kg. There is no charge for transporting pushchairs and strollers. When checking in these will be labelled as a hold item, but can be used as far as boarding.

Flying with Children (2 to 11 years)

Children receive a minimum discount of 33% (according to the flight). Children have the same baggage allowances as an adult, for hand baggage and hold baggage. Children will be served a children's meal. Please request this when booking, at least 48 hours prior to departure.

Flying with Animals

Flying with animals is permitted. The airline will need to be informed at the time of booking - this can be completed during the booking process or by contacting our customer service team.

In the cabin: in addition to cabin allowance, pets in their container/cage are allowed with a maximum weight of 05Kg. Fees apply - guide dogs are excluded from fees.

In the hold: Included in the hold allowance - excess weight will be charged at the normal rate. Fees apply.

Special Assistance

Special assistance is available for disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility. Please contact our customer service team no later than 48 hours before departure so that we can inform the airline of your needs. You can also complete the ‘Special Requests’ form during the booking process.
