Some of Europe's top cities are only a short flight away from London!

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The city is immensely photogenic, with a winding canal system lined by narrow buildings with elaborate facades — legacies of the city's 17th century Golden Age.

Ámsterdam

The city is known for being a liberal hub, but Amsterdam is also a lot more than what it’s known for legalising, thanks to its diverse culture and rich history. Amsterdam boasts a large Museum District, where a must-visit has to be the Van Gogh Museum — a large museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh, and one of the most popular museums in the world. Nearby, you’ll also find the Rijksmuseum, home to artworks by some of the best loved names in classical art, including Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Anne Frank House is another one of Amsterdam’s most visited sites, a museum dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank.

Hiring a bike is one of the best ways to explore Amsterdam and is a popular way to travel between the city’s tourist sites.

Top Tip: Spring is a great time to visit Amsterdam, which bursts into colour thanks to the tulips that adorn the city's canal banks.

Antwerp's formally abandoned dockside district has been revitalised in recent years. The district’s great warehouses and rusty maritime outlets have been transformed into museums and trendy coffee bars. Head to a vintage store and browse through vinyl before relaxing at a swanky cocktail bar.

As you wind around the cobbled streets of the city you'll also discover a stunning mix of architecture, inducing Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and Neo-Classicism — in fact, the Zurenborg neighbourhood is widely held as one of the best Art Nouveau suburbs in the world. As you explore the city, don’t miss out on visiting The Rubenshuis, the former home and studio of renowned painter Peter Paul Rubens, and make sure you tick-off the Museum aan de Stroom, which has unrivalled views of the city from its upper outdoor viewing deck.

Top Tip: Visit in the summer and coincide your trip with the ‘Summer of Antwerp’ festival, when abandoned gas factories are transformed into urban dance halls, an outdoor cinema is open for free and a number of bars pop-up across the city.

Cologne’s locals are known for their liberal, joyful, and life-affirming attitude. This can be best experienced during the city's Pride festival (held each July), which is one of the best in Europe!

Antoni Gaudi, the renowned architect and designer, played an instrumental role in the Art Nouveau movement in Spain, which flourished towards the end of the 19th century. Salzburg is a majestic Austrian city on the border of Germany, with views of the Eastern Alps. Most of Salzburg's top sights can be ticked-off in a day, making this compact city the perfect destination for a weekend break. The city is famed for its baroque architecture, and around every turn you'll discover twisted spires and romantic gardens.

salzburg

Salzburg's historic buildings largely avoided damage during the Second World War, and in 1997, the city of Salzburg became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most striking features of Salzburg's skyline is the Festung Hohensalzburg, a 900-year-old fortress which towers above the city and is easily reached by cable-car from the city centre.

Perhaps best known for being the birthplace of Mozart, visitors can explore the world-renowned composer's former home, and experience his music at one of the hundreds of concerts held throughout the year.

During your visit to the city, you can even follow in the footsteps of Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp, as Salzburg is home to many of the locations where the 1965 film 'The Sound of Music' was filmed.

No matter when you visit, Salzburg has much to offer. During the winter, the city transforms into a snowy winter wonderland, with traditional markets and scenes that could be straight from a Victorian Christmas card. During the spring and summer, the lush rolling hills of the surrounding countryside really do come alive and are abundant with meadow flowers.
