About Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport (IATA: EDI) is Scotland's busiest airport. It is located within the City of Edinburgh, UK, in the area of Ingliston. As Scotland's busiest airport in 2018, it handled over 14.3 million passengers, also making it the 6th-busiest airport in the United Kingdom.

The airport was originally a small air defence base, which opened in 1916, later named RAF Turnhouse in 1918. After World War II in the late 1940s, the airport began to facilitate commercial flights, with the runway being extended and a new passenger terminal built and later extended. In 1971, the BAA took ownership of the airport and improvements to the terminal and runways was immediatly proposed. In 2013, however, further plans to expand the airport terminal was announced, with runway 12/30 being withdrawn from operations in 2018.

Although located in Edinburgh, the airport serves a much wider area, including Lothian, Glasgow, Fife, the Scottish Borders, Central Scotland and of course the city of Edinburgh.
