About
Iberia Regional is a Spanish airline that flies scheduled passenger flights. The airline is legally and commonly known as Air Nostrum. However, as a franchisee of Spanish national carrier, Iberia, it operates under the Iberia Regional name. The airline offers a large number of domestic flights within Spain, as well as to international destinations throughout Europe and North Africa. Overall, the airline flies to more than 70 destinations.
The airline was created in 1994 under the name Líneas Aéreas del Mediterraneo/Air Nostrum and flew its first-ever service the same year. When the airline first started flying, it only operated a small number of domestic flights and didn't begin international flights until years later. In 1997, the airline agreed to a partnership with Iberia, which saw it become a franchisee of Iberia and take on the Iberia Regional brand and name.
The airline has undergone several mergers that has allowed it to expand its route network dramatically over the years. Its first merger was with Binter Mediterraneo in 1997 after it partnered with Iberia. Binter Mediterraneo was an existing subsidiary of Iberia and upon the Air Nostrum/Iberia merger, Iberia Regional took on all of Binter Mediterraneo's flights. The second major merger happened when Iberia merged with Aviaco, instead of mainline Iberia taking on Aviaco's route, the airline decided to give the routes to Iberia Regional instead. The next merger came in 1999 when it merged with an airline from the Netherlands, Denim Air. Iberia Regional took on many of Denim Air's routes but decided to stop operating them a few years after. Its latest merger came in 2018 when the airline merged with CityJet. However, unlike previous mergers, the airline decided to keep Iberia Regional and CityJet as two separate brands due to their already large presences in their respective areas of the continent.
Due to an airline agreement, many of Iberia Regional flights are operated by Vueling. Alternative Airlines will display which flights are operated by Vueling when a passenger is selecting their flight.
