About Richmond International Airport
Richmond International Airport (IATA: RIC) is an airport located in Sandston, Virginia, US, just outside of Richmond. It is a joint-use airport between civil population and the military. The airport is currently the busiest airport in central Virginia, and also the 3rd-busiest within the state of Virginia, after Washington D.C.'s two major airports (Washington Dulles and Washington National). In 2018, the airport dealt with 4,077,763 passengers from over 100,000 aircraft operations.
The airport as we know it was first established in 1975 and is owned by the Capital Region Airport Commission, although the airport was originally an airfield in 1927, called Richard Evelyn Byrd Flying Field. In 1950, the airport was renamed to Richard E. Byrd Airport, the same year that the terminal was completed. The airport was eventually renamed to its current form, Richmond International Airport in 1984. The 2000s saw the airport grow extensively, with renovation announced for the airport in 2005. The renovation resulted in a single-story terminal with 22 gates, upgraded parking facilities, a new terminal road and also an ATC (air traffic control tower). Following this, the airport announced that starting late 2018, they would expand the airport further, adding gates to the concourse and expanding the security area in concourse B.
