About Southern Airways

Southern Airways was a regional airline based in Atlanta, USA. It was founded in 1944 and flew to many domestic destinations in the United States.

The airline was based at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It had a fleet consisting of a range of aircraft including the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and the Douglas DC-3.

Southern Airways ceased operations in 1979 when it merged into North Central Airlines to eventually become Republic Airlines. Republic Airlines then ceased operations in 1986 after it merged into Northwest Airlines.

After many more years, Northwest Airlines also ceased operations and merged into Delta Air Lines in 2010.


Southern Airways flew to over 80 cities in the United States including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Jackson, Memphis, New Orleans, New York, Tampa and Washington, D.C., among many others.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is an international airport that serves the city of Atlanta in the United States. Hartsfield has been the world's busiest airport based on passenger numbers since 1998, however, it briefly lost this title during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This airport is currently a hub for Delta Air Lines. Delta operates 1,000 flights a day to over 220 destinations worldwide from Atlanta. It's also a focus city for Frontier, Southwest and Spirit Airlines.
