TAROM lleva a Timisoara a Iasi y Cluj-Napoca

The Romanian airline commenced its second and third domestic routes from Timisoara this week after Bucharest, with the Romanian flag carrier now linking the former city to Iasi and Cluj-Napoca. A press conference was held at Iasi Airport to celebrate the new service, with the airport also baking a classic three-tier cake for the launch.

The carrier opened its second and third domestic routes from Timisoara (TSR) this week, namely Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) and Iasi (IAS). The airline already links Timisoara with Bucharest. Iasi flights commenced on 25 marzo and will be flown four times weekly. Cluj-Napoca services were inaugurated the following day and will be operated three times weekly. No competition will be provided on either of the 504- and 211-kilometre sectors, with both scheduled to be operated by the carrier’s fleet of 68-seat ATR 72-500s based on OAG data.

The airline also plans investments worth RON 440 million (EUR 94 million) this year, according to the same document.

“A restructuring procedure will follow. This is a normal thing to happen because we have an over-sized staff relative to the number of aircraft flown,” the minister said.

He added that he was waiting for a plan to be drafted by the carrier interim general director Alexandru Susanu by septiembre 10.

The airline has a fleet of 23 aircraft and almost 2,000 employees. The company reported losses of RON 104 million (EUR 22.7 million) in the first six months of this year. It recorded RON 47 million (EUR 10.3 million) losses last year, higher than in 2015, when the company was EUR 6 million in the red, according to public data from the Finance Ministry. The company hasn’t managed to find solutions to the strong competition from low cost airlines in recent years.

Alexandru Susanu was appointed as interim general director of the airline at the end of August, with a one-month mandate. Former manager Eugen Davidoiu resigned as the Prime Minister’s Control Body launched a series of controls at the airline and at the National Investments Company.
