VLU Update

VLU is a new startup airline, which has yet to commence flights. Although the airline does hope to begin operating in 2021, VLU has yet to take to the sky. About VLU

VLU is a startup airline, which will provide leisure-oriented scheduled flights from its base at Toluca International Airport, near Mexico City. VLU is a sister company of Tum Aerocarga (cargo), which began operating in 2016 and is owned by Grupo TUM — a Mexican company focused on cargo transportation. VLU will initially operate using five Bombardier CJ200 type aircraft, operating domestic flights to key tourist hotspots.

Destinos

VLU will serve domestic routes to touristic destinations. The airline will begin with 11 routes out of Toluca: Tijuana, Culiacan, Merida, Villahermosa, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Cancun, Monterrey. Two further destinations have yet to be announced.

The airline has yet to publish an announcement regarding recommended check-in times. However, in most instances it is recommended that passengers arrive as early as possible, usually about 2 hours before scheduled departure.

The airline has yet to state what the onboard experience will be like, nor what class fares, such as Economy, Premium, or Business, will be available.


Flota

The airline will begin flights using a fleet of five Bombardier CJ200 type aircraft. Each plane will have a capacity for 50 passengers. The airline’s sister company, TUM AeroCarga, already has five of these planes, used for cargo operations. TUM AeroCarga also operates Boeing 737.

Toluca International Airport

Toluca International Airport is a hub located an hour and a half away (by car) from Mexico City. Today, it is mostly private charter airlines that operate from the airport, as well as a small number of scheduled passenger flights to domestic destinations. TAR Aerolíneas currently operates a number of flights that connect with cities including Querétaro, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and San Luis Potosí. Viva Aerobus also flies from Toluca International Airport to Cancun and Monterrey. Conviasa is the only international airline to operate from the airport, connecting Toluca with Caracas.

Mexico City’s Toluca Airport to get its own airline

According to Luis Federico Bertrand Rubio, general director of Toluca International Airport, a new airline, called VLU, is set to begin flights from the airport. Rubio said that VLU hopes to serve domestic routes to touristic destinations within Mexico.
